NFC and RFID

Tag PPE with NFC chips, RFID or QR codes

With a unique tag you can find every article in seconds – without typing in the serial number. Here you can find out which technology suits you.

Basics

What is RFID, what is NFC?

RFID uses electromagnetic waves for unique identification. Every RFID chip (tag) has its own number, the UID. APPEC reads this UID and stores it as the article's identifier.

NFC is based on RFID and works in the HF frequency band (13.56 MHz). Most smartphones read these chips directly.

  • LF – 125 kHz / 134.2 kHz: reader required
  • HF – 13.56 MHz: readable with an NFC-enabled smartphone
  • UHF – 860–960 MHz: reader required

FAQ

Questions about tagging

Can't find your question? Check the documentation or write to us.

How do I tag my equipment?

With NFC chips, QR codes or barcodes. Codes already applied by the manufacturer can be used directly. Articles without a tag can be found via search and filters.

Do I need an NFC reader?

Usually not. Most smartphones read NFC chips directly, and any device with a camera scans QR codes and barcodes. For PCs, iPads and chips with other frequencies we recommend Bluetooth readers: they work like a keyboard and with any device – more under NFC and RFID.

Can I use chips already fitted by the manufacturer?

Yes, if your device can read the frequency. Smartphones read HF chips directly, for LF and UHF you need a suitable reader.
